Sylva

an urban-type settlement in Perm’ Raion, Perm’ Oblast, RSFSR, on the left bank of the Sylva River, a tributary of the Chusovaia. Sylva has a railroad station 50 km to the east of Perm’. Industry in the settlement is represented by a glassworks and a poultry farm.

Sylva

a river in Sverdlovsk and Perm’ oblasts, RSFSR. The Sylva is 493 km long and drains an area of 19,700 sq km. It rises on the western slopes of the Central Urals and flows mainly westward, emptying into Chusovaia Bay of the Kama Reservoir.

The Sylva is a meandering river. Karst, including the Kungur Peshchera, is developed in the river’s lower basin. The Sylva is fed mainly by snow. The mean flow rate 45 km from the mouth is 139 cu m per sec. The river freezes in November, and ice jams are common. The ice breaks up in April. The main tributaries are the Iren’, on the left, and the Barda and Shakva, on the right. The Sylva is navigable for a distance of 74 km from the mouth. The city of Kungur is located on the river.

Sylva

a ridge in the central part of the Ural Region, in Perm’ and Sverdlovsk oblasts, RSFSR. The Sylva Ridge is about 90 km long and merges with the Ufa Plateau in the south. Its maximum elevation is 402 m. The eastern slope drops abruptly to the valleys of the Sylva and Ufa rivers, whereas the western slope is gentle. The ridge is composed of Permian limestones, dolomites, and gypsums; karst is developed. Steppe and meadow-steppe predominate, alternating with coppices of birch, linden, maple, and, less frequently, conifers.
