a device, usually a fan or compressor driven by the engine, that increases the mass of air drawn into an internal-combustion engine by raising the intake pressure

An air pump or blower in the intake system of an internal combustion engine used to increase the weight of air charge and consequent power output from a given engine size.

supercharger

An engine or exhaust-driven fan or impeller used to provide additional fuel-air mixture to the engine so that it can produce additional power. This is done by forcing more fuel-air mixture into the cylinders than could be done by a normally aspirated engine at ambient atmospheric pressure. Supercharging prevents the loss of power with an increase in altitude and helps maintain the manifold pressure. See also turbocharger.
