telemetry

The science of measuring a quantity, or quantities; transmitting the results to a distant station; and there interpreting, indicating, and/or recording the quantities measured. The data and other information are transmitted in real time normally by a radio link. The system is used in aircraft and system testing but includes reconnaissance data and those transmitted to and from missiles.

Transmitting data captured by instrumentation and measuring devices to a remote station where they are recorded and analyzed. For example, data from a weather satellite are telemetered to earth.

Telemetry

 

a synonym of “telemetering.”

The Russian terms telemetriia and teleizmerenie may both be translated as “telemetry” or “telemetering.” The term telemetriia was borrowed from non-Russian scientific literature and has traditionally been applied to the investigation of biological processes and the measurement of biological indexes at a distance (seeBIOTELEMETRY) and to the measurement and transmission of meteorological data from meteorological balloons or rockets, from artificial earth satellites, or from automatic ground meteorological stations located in relatively inaccessible regions (see). When the points at which measurements are made are distant from the control center, the data are transmitted through radio communication channels; in this case, the term “radio telemetry” is used (seeRADIO REMOTE CONTROL).
