Rock Island

 

a city in the USA, in Illinois. Population, 50,000 (1974; with the neighboring cities of Moline and Davenport and their common suburban area, 365,000). A port on the Mississippi River, the city is an important transportation junction. As of 1973, industry employed 44,000. Rock Island has plants producing agricultural machinery, road machines, and heating equipment. There are also metalworking, food-processing, and defense industries.

In 1808, the decision was made by the Sauk nation to consolidate smaller villages into the city now known as Saukenuk, near the Rock River in Rock Island.
